In the heart of ROMANTIC PARIS

The Hotel Excelsior Latin is the perfect base from which to enjoy romantic Paris and discover all its secrets. In the heart of the Latin Quarter, the hotel is a short walk from the Sorbonne, Saint-Germain, the Luxembourg Gardens and the Mouffetard district. It is also only a few minutes' walk from the principal museums and historic buildings of the City of Light: Notre-Dame, the Musée d'Orsay, the Louvre, Sainte Chapelle and Beaubourg. A little further away (by metro or bus) is the Eiffel Tower, the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, Montmartre, Sacré-Cœur…

Map of paris

The latin quarter

World famous since the Middle Ages, the Latin Quarter beats to the rhythm of its heart: the Sorbonne University. On the street of (great) schools, among the high walls of Humanist learning and in the shadow of great historic buildings, bookshops, record shops, cafés and charming little squares. This quarter exerts an intense magnetism.

The SORBONNE

Balzac, Calvin, Bergson, Erasmus, Lévi-Strauss… and many others frequented its lecture theatres and alcoves since the Middle Ages. Like Oxford, Bologna, Heidelberg and Salamanca, the Sorbonne is one of the centres of European learning. Today its chapel, façade and academic buildings are emblematic and magnificent sites in the history of Paris.

The PANTHEON

This was originally conceived as a large church at the behest of Louis XV. But Robespierre and the fiery Revolutionaries were not having any of that. The church was thus transformed into a proud "Temple from a grateful nation" for the ashes of "great men". It became the official place of worship of the Enlightenment for the French. Will you find, beneath its colossal domes, Voltaire, Rousseau, Hugo, Jaurès, Zola, Marie Curie, Louis Braille, Jean Moulin and Alexandre Dumas?

The LUXEMBOURG Gardens

Since 1612, the romantic Luxembourg Gardens have clothed the heart of Paris with greenery, statues and colour. In its 20 hectares of trees and flowers, you will find flowerbeds and fountains, statues of the queens of France, and of the likes of Flaubert, Beethoven and Chopin. Among these formal areas of the garden or in its landscaped parklands, are vast ornamental lakes where children can sail model boats like in a novel by Proust. Among a thousand images is the Luxembourg Palace, now the Senate building, its museum, tennis courts, children's playgrounds and chess players.
